Saccharomyces boulardii is a unique, non-pathogenic and tropical yeast (fungus). Unlike most probiotics which are bacteria based, Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast - a hardy, acid-resistant, temperature-tolerant micro-organism that is not affected by antibacterial agents or antibiotics.

It differs greatly from other better-known probiotic species, such as acidophilus and bifidobacterium strains for example. What's more, although it is in the same genus as Saccharomyces cerevisiae (bakers, brewers or dietary yeast), Saccharomyces boulardii is not linked to the Candida species (Candida albicans, tropicalas, etc.), Crohns disease or any other disease.
